Charcoal toothpaste whitens teeth by removing stains on the outer surface of enamel.  But once you've removed stains, the charcoal continues, removing a small amount of enamel every time you brush.

Charcoal Toothpaste
can whiten...but there's a catch.

As the charcoal continues to wear the enamel, the dentin -- the layer under the enamel -- can become exposed or apparent through thin enamel. Dentin is yellow, so your teeth become yellow once again.

Thin enamel means yellow teeth and increased sensitivity

Studies have found that charcoal's benefits are largely unsubstantiated, and the high abrasive potential can be harmful to teeth.

Not only are charcoal toothpastes potentially damaging to teeth, but one study found a charcoal toothpaste contained
naphthalene, a chemical found in mothballs and classified a probable carcinogen, neurotoxin, and liver toxin.
